Just how durable is Apple's new iPhone lineup? Thanks to a drop test by American insurance company Allstate, we now have a better sense of the toughness of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro boast a new Ceramic Shield exterior, which Apple says makes the phones four times more durable than previous models. Apple also returned to a flat edge design similar to the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, another element intended to improve resilience.

Allstate's drop test finds the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro being released from six feet up in the air. When dropped face down, the iPhone 12 showed small cracks, scuffed corners and edges, and sharp metal, while the iPhone 12 Pro fared a bit worse with cracked and raised glass. After being dropped back down, the iPhone 12 had scuffed corners and edges and exposed sharp metal. Again, the impact was more severe for the iPhone 12 Pro, which shattered and showed raised, loose glass as well as a cracked camera. Both phones performed well during the side drop test, however, experiencing scuffed corners and edges and sharp metal.

As a result of the tests, we see that the new Ceramic Shield and the flat edge design of the iPhone 12 have improved the overall durability of Apple's flagship smartphone. Yet, while the iPhone 12 Pro is more expensive and marketed as the superior device, the iPhone 12 is better in terms of durability.
