Double Tap to Zoom

You know when you make a bad joke and you get carried away? That's basically the back story of Tesla's latest innovation: Tesla Tequila.

What started out as an April Fool's joke by Tesla founder Elon Musk has actually turned into a branded liquor, retailing for $250. It's a questionable meeting of cars and alcohol consumption that we wish had remained a joke on Twitter.

On Thursday, the car manufacturer announced that Tesla Tequila is available to order now on its site, offering “an exclusive, small-batch premium 100 percent de agave tequila añejo.” The drink comes in a lightning-shaped bottle and is produced by Nosotros Tequila, a spirits brand in Southern California.

It all began in 2018 when Musk hit back at bankruptcy rumors with a corny joke about "Teslaquilla." He even had the company apply for a trademark on the name at one point.

Now the jokes on us, with the product selling out within hours of its launch, even as orders were limited to two bottles each and only made available to customers in certain US states. Deliveries are scheduled to take place later this year.
